As a certified arborist I spend a great deal of time teaching home owners how to take care of their trees.
One of the tools I like to arm my clients with is called a TREE LOG which is simply a field guide covering the basic techniques for tree pruning. It is a binder with easy to follow directions but it is designed to go out in the yard with the pruner so he or she can refer back to it as they work.
It's great to sit and watch a youtube video or study a book but amazing how your tree doesn't look like the perfect example in their sample.
I take actual trees and show you how to work from a step by step process to know what to prune.
Why you prune a certain way is about the biology of the tree. So I have two pages on the basic biology you absolutely have to know about a tree before you prune. It helps you in so many parts of the decision process.
The TREE LOG is also where you keep your notes on that particular tree you are pruning so next year you don't have to think about what you are going to do, it is in your notes.
It is also where you record what pesticide or fertilizer was done to your tree every year so you track that information to keep unscrupulous pest control companies from charging you for services you do not need.
If you are interested in getting a TREE LOG field binder it is $38 plus shipping and handling. Please contact me, Ted Smith, at greenteam.ted@gmail.com
